Although the Schmitt Island Master Plan was completed in 2024, there are some trail highlights that offer more recreational opportunities for hikers and cyclists. Last year, the trail beginning at the16th Street Bridge was extended eastward to the Veteran’s Memorial. Plans call for an additional trail to circle around the Memorial pond area to the riverside forested area just north of the boat ramp. Two fire council circle gathering areas along the riverfront are also in the plans. Meanwhile, ecological restoration would occur on all of the island’s forested areas.
North of the highway, a boardwalk is proposed along Miller Riverview Park and within the interior of the wetlands areas. A beach is suggested on the northwest corner of the island with the eventual construction of a pedestrian bridge over to the Yardarm area.
The Dubuque Marina and Catfish Charlie business area is to be revamped into a complex with multiuse housing, business, and outdoor recreational opportunities, including plazas for walking, an ice-skating ribbon, and playground.
Water trail routes are also designated on both sides of the island.
