Bike Rodeo Fun at Bryant and Audubon
The Dubuque Bike Coop, City of Dubuque, and Tri-State Trail Vision teamed up to support two bike rodeos at Bryant and Audubon Schools in May 6 and May 12. Thanks to the efforts of the school principals—Megan Richardson and Ed Glaser, respectively—for encouraging students to ride their bikes to school. The bike rodeo consists of a helmet check station; a bike inspection station looking at air, brakes, and chain; and practicing at several ride skill stations. Students were asked to ride a straight path, weave between cones, figure 8s, practice left and right turns, complete a snail race, and a chaos box. The snail race required riders to go as slow as possible without touching the ground. The last one to cross the finish line won. The chaos box included four riders who were to miss each other as they ride slowly in an appropriate 30x30 square foot box and stay within the lines.
Jason Duba, Assistant City Planner and bike enthusiast, and Justine Hull, Assistant Traffic Engineer, organized the event with the school principals. Duba, Hull, and other city officials set up the course. Bike Coop volunteers shared their time and expertise evaluating and repairing bikes for fitness and safety. Tri-State Trail Vision members assisted with helmet fitting, course directing, and skill building.
