Outdoor Natural Playground Coming in Spring 2026
Playing outdoors can always be fun when imagination takes over. However, Wanderwood Gardens, adjacent to the Dubuque Arboretum, will take outdoor play to an entirely new level next spring. Thanks to the generosity of Debi and Andy Butler and the Butler Children’s Garden Foundation, the natural playscape will include a magical outdoor playground, complete with water features, a tree canopy playset, a small village, and interactive nature-themed exhibits to expand on imaginative fun. Trails will lead from one activity area to another. A bird sanctuary, a musical garden, and stage will spark the creative muse further. An education center will have classroom space and a courtyard. A Dubuque mine camp will tie in with the area’s heritage. A meadow of plants will host native flowers and butterflies. Spinning bird sculptures flying overhead will intrigue visitors as well. A map with descriptions of the features is present on their site, WanderwoodGardens.com.
Jared McGovern, former Director of Conservation and Programs at the Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium, has been hired as The Wanderwood Gardens Director. He brings a strong background in conservation and environmental projects, having received recognition and awards for his work and leadership over the past 14 years.
The park is not only for children but for “adventurers” and “daydreamers” of all ages. This fascinating project will be a great asset to create interest in outdoor recreation and appreciation for future generations.
